The NFL plans its championship venues years in advance and we've known for awhle now that Super Bowl 2012 is set for Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The game will be played February 5 at the indoor/outdoor venue that seats about 70,000, but with the usual temperature in the Hoosier state in early February rarely venturing north of 40 degrees, you can bet the roof will be closed. It's also easier for planning purposes, according to the NFL.
The 2012 Super Bowl, then, will be the first time the game will be played indoors in back-to-back seasons.
Super Bowl XLVI marks the fourth time that the championship game will be played in a cold weather city. Minneapolis hosted Super Bowl XXVI while Detroit has been the host twice--once at the Silverdome (XVI) and once at new Ford Field (XL).
The Indianapolis Colts will likely be gunning to get back to the big game after losing to New Orleans in Super Bowl 44. Having a game in their home stadium would be a huge advantage, even if season ticket holders make up only 10 percent of the crowd.
The game will be televised by NBC, with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth expected to form the play-by-play tandem.
Super Bowl 2012 will be the first time Indianapolis has hosted a Super Bowl, but the city is well versed in big time events, having hosted numerous NCAA basketball Final Fours and of course, the Indy 500.
