Lambeau Field Hotels: Where to Stay

Fans are always ready to make the trek up to Lambeau Field to watch their pride and joy battle it out on the gridiron but what about finding Lambeau Field hotels?

Packer fans seem to come from all parts of the country. They come from as far away as Arizona and Florida. They come from neighboring states like Illinois and Iowa. Many make a 3 or 4 hour drive from points all over Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. No matter where they come from, anyone planning to spend a weekend in Green Bay during football season, needs to make reservations in advance.

With a capacity of about 73,000 and a stadium that sells out year after year, Lambeau Field, on Lombardi Avenue, is the center of activity in Green Bay. When a game is going on, the streets of the city are empty until the game ends. Thousands and thousands of fans come from out of town and need overnight lodging.

There are about 30 hotels in Green Bay, all within a few miles from Lambeau Field. Appleton, Wisconsin, about 25 miles from Lambeau Field, has another 20 or so hotels. During the summer and the rest of the off season, most of the hotels charge well under $100 per night. Some of the more budget friendly hotels like the Econolodge, Days Inn and Travelodge have rates for less than $50 per night. Some slightly more upscale hotels like the Radisson, Hampton Inn and Cambria Suites offer rooms for about $80 – $100 per night.

However, when the Packers are in town, the rates skyrocket. A room that only a few weeks ago would run you $50, suddenly costs more than $100 per night. At many of the nicer hotels close to Lambeau Field, nightly rates can easily approach, and in some cases, exceed, $200 per night.

It’s not impossible to find a hotel near Lambeau Field but be prepared to accept some rather stringent requirements.  Many hotels and motels require a two-night stay and some do not offer refunds in the event of a cancellation.  Hotels are closer to capacity when the weather is nicer.  Fewer tourists come when the weather turns ice cold as it often does after Thanksgiving.

Even if money is no problem, finding a room may be. If you don’t have family or a friend in the area who can put you up for a night or two, the best advice is to book early. If you plan on going to a game, plan on making arrangements for your stay as soon as the schedule becomes official or at least before the start of the season.
