Packer fans: What is your Favre memorabilia worth now?
He's captivated football fans and collectors since 1992, so the divorce between the Packers and Brett Favre makes one wonder what will happen to the player who helped move NFL trading cards and sports autographs for so long.
Near term, Favre's reputation has taken a hit in Wisconsin. After saying over and over again he'd never wear another uniform, the most popular player in Packers history has done just that. Packer fans love Favre--but they love the green and gold jerseys more--regardless of who is wearing them.
Had he not decided to return, it's likely Favre rookie cards and autographs would have held their value. Perhaps not as many would change hands--that tends to happen when a player retires. Yet Favre's iconic status has his face in virtually every Wisconsin home --and thousands of others across the country.
However, the move also opens Favre up to a new fan base which has wholeheartedly embraced him. Since he's gone to a major media market, fans may not be able to get enough if the Jets do well. Favre's old Packer jerseys and items bearing his autograph will be 'old school'. Some athletes even refuse to sign items attached to their former team. If the divorce is too nasty here, it's possible Favre won't sign much Packer material for awhile and that will create a spike in value.
Brett Favre rookie cards have held steady, with prices for high grade 1991 Topps Stadium Club between $40 and $60 each. Lower tier rookie cards--even in good shape-- can still be had for less than $5 each. Favre autographs are still much more reasonably priced than some Hall of Famers.
Long term, the good memories of the glory days outweigh the bad. And #4 had a lot of glory days in Green Bay--even if the end may stray from what was once a perfect script.
