The following was written late in the 2004 season when some fans on internet message boards and talk shows were questioning whether Brett Favre was still the right quarterback to lead the Packers.

I'm an expatriate Cheesehead and it boggles my mind to go back home and sit in the stands or look at a message board and hear people bash Favre. My God, do you remember what things were like from 1968-91?

Not only did we pull the slot lever and come up with all sevens thanks to Ron Wolf and his eye for talent, we get to keep pulling that lever every year Favre hangs around. He is simply one of the 3 or 4 best quarterbacks of all time and hands down, the most entertaining. Those of you have ever uttered something about trading him--even if you took those words back--should have your residency stripped and never be allowed to watch a Packer game again. Never complain about him under any circumstances. Not after what he's done for you, Mr. and Mrs. Fickle.

If he hangs on a year too long and starts playing like a mortal (which I don't think he'll do), cut him some slack. Some day--2, 3 or maybe 4 years from now, we will finally find out what it's like (for the first time in 270-plus games) to have someone else running the offense. And then those people who complained will find out he was a pretty good quarterback--worthy of a standing ovation nearly every time he left the field.

You get a little queasy hearing the TV announcers go on and on about Favre? Maybe they get something thtose of you who live in his own backyard don't. Five years from now, you will wish you could hear those flowery words again and have him on the field when the Pack is down 10 in the fourth quarter and Favre is in his recliner down in Mississippi.

When they do have Brett Favre Day at Lambeau Field in 2005 or 2006 or 2007, if you're lucky enough to be at the game, stand and yell until you lose your voice.

Clap until your hands bleed.

Shed a tear. We'll understand.

Because he played hurt more than any of us will ever know. He gave it everything he had, all the time. And he gave you more thrills and chills than you could have ever dreamed about back when all we could do was dream about having such a player.

The Packers franchise will never have another Favre.

Check that.

The NFL will never have another Favre. And you're damn lucky you were alive to see him.
